Pick a picture

You will require

  • A set of images of things that happen in church (see examples)
  • Some simple questions

For this activity you will be asking individuals for their views on what happens at church during a service. You will be using pictures to make it easier but stress that they are only a guide. (This activity could also be used for looking at their youth / children’s group using different images).

Sit the group of children / young people in a circle and lay the images in the middle. When they are ready ask them some questions:

  • What do you like about church services
  • What don’t you like about church services
  • Is there anything you don't understand during a church service
  • When do you sometimes loose interest during a church service
  • When do you feel most happy during a church service
  • When do you feel close to God during a church service
  • What would you like to do more of during a church service
  • What would you like to do less of during a church service

Each time you ask a question invite the children / young people to point to an image that best shows their answer. Then allow time for some discussion about why they have chosen that picture.

Ask an adult to sit outside of the circle and write down any the key points the children / young people say. This can then be fed back to the PCC and other stakeholders.
